 Brief Description:

Plans and runs special events at a venue for clients - small meetings, large conferences or seminars of up to a week, weddings, corporate parties or family occasions.


Typical tasks undertaken in this profession: 21

»  

Monitor event activities to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and laws, satisfaction of participants, and resolution of any problems that arise. 

»  

Confer with staff at a chosen event site to coordinate details. 

»  

Inspect event facilities to ensure that they conform to customer requirements. 

»  

Coordinate services for events, such as accommodation and transportation for participants, facilities, catering, signage, displays, special needs requirements, printing and event security. 

»  

Consult with customers to determine objectives and requirements for events such as meetings, conferences, and conventions. 

»  

Meet with sponsors and organizing committees to plan scope and format of events, to establish and monitor budgets, or to review administrative procedures and event progress. 

»  

Review event bills for accuracy, and approve payment. 

»  

Evaluate and select providers of services according to customer requirements. 

»  

Arrange the availability of audio-visual equipment, transportation, displays, and other event needs. 

»  

Plan and develop programs, agendas, budgets, and services according to customer requirements.

Qualifications required?

Relevant experience in Bar or Catering area plus additional training.

Typical entry routes:

Food and beverage/ catering training is key to Conference & Banqueting. Trained restaurant and bar staff can work their way up to being event co-ordinators by doing specific short training programmes, such as supervisory skills or event management. There are some specific courses in Event Management and there are a number of add-on courses in Event Management that you can do after undertaking and more general course. It’s very important, even if you do a specialised course, to get work experience on the operational side of making an event happen, e.g. as a host/ hostess or waiter/ waitress on an event.

• A one year course: Some Colleges of Further Education offer direct entry courses in event management. For example: Tourism Event Management – Bray College of Further Education.

• A two or three year course: The Institutes of Technology offer direct entry courses such as Tourism with Business or Tourism and Hospitality Studies and CAO courses such as Event Management with Public Relations, all of which can lead you into an Event Management job. For example: Event Management – Dublin Institute of Technology.
