There are no training courses in Ireland. There are two centres for Orthoptic training in England:

• The University of Sheffield (B.Med.Sci Hons)
• The University of Liverpool (B.Sc.Hons)

Applicants to the course will be invited to undertake personal interviews, to see facilities and meet the staff and students. It is advised that those interested in applying for this course should visit an orthoptic department first. Please contact your local hospital to organise a visit to an eye department to see Orthoptists at work.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Approximate Leaving Certificate grades required at Higher Level BBBCC including biology (subject to change).

Mature students will be considered individually depending on their previous qualifications and experience.

TRAINING

The three-year degree in Orthoptics incorporates both the theoretical studies and clinical practice necessary for students to become state registered Orthoptists and practice clinically on graduation.

Topics covered include orthoptics, optics, anatomy, physiology, ophthalmology and behavioural sciences. The training includes clinical placements using local departments throughout the U.K.
