In Brief... Anaesthetist

 Brief Description:

Anaesthetists are doctors who prevent patients from feeling pain whilst they undergo surgery and other medical procedures.

The Anaesthetist ensures that both the patient and the conditions of the operating theatre are ready for surgery. He/she liases with nurses and surgeons to ensure that this happens. During the operation the Anaesthetist has responsibility for the wellbeing of the patients vital organs. He/she ensures that the patient is comfortable and without pain.

Keeping a patient comfortable during an operation usually requires an anaesthetic, hence the word Anaesthetist. After an operation it is the responsibility of the Anaesthetist to ensure that the patient comes out from under the anaesthetic. The vital organs of the patient are then monitored to ensure that they are functioning correctly.

An anaesthetist is a specialist position gained after years of experience as a doctor. The position is obtained only from within the profession.


Typical tasks undertaken in this profession: 18

»  

Administer anesthetic or sedation during medical procedures, using local, intravenous, spinal, or caudal methods. 

»  

Monitor patient before, during, and after anesthesia and counteract adverse reactions or complications. 

»  

Provide and maintain life support and airway management and help prepare patients for emergency surgery. 

»  

Record type and amount of anesthesia and patient condition throughout procedure. 

»  

Examine patient, obtain medical history, and use diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures. 

»  

Position patient on operating table to maximize patient comfort and surgical accessibility. 

»  

Decide when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be sent to another room or ward or to be sent home following outpatient surgery. 

»  

Coordinate administration of anesthetics with surgeons during operation. 

»  

Confer with other medical professionals to determine type and method of anesthetic or sedation to render patient insensible to pain. 

»  

Coordinate and direct work of nurses, medical technicians, and other health care providers.

Candidates usually have one or two years general medical training before applying to the three-year training scheme which is by open competition from The Fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
