In Brief... Aircraft Mechanic

 Brief Description:

Performs repairs, safety check and maintenance on aircraft.

During the flight of an aircraft, the performance of the aircraft is recorded in a technical log. After the aircraft has landed the Aircraft Mechanic checks this log to identify any problems that the aircraft may have had during the flight and sets about repairing them.

At other times, aircraft are regularly sent to the Aircraft Mechanic for a service. It is then the responsibility of the mechanic to carry out a full maintenance on the aircraft checking all of its systems before it can fly again.

These mechanics usually specialise in one area of aircraft maintenance. Some will work solely with on the electronics of the aircraft while others will work solely on the fuselage or the engines.


Personal Attributes: good concentration, sense of responsibility, attention to detail, technical skill.

Typical tasks undertaken in this profession: 38

»  

Read and interpret maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and other specifications to determine the feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components. 

»  

Inspect completed work to certify that maintenance meets standards and that aircraft are ready for operation. 

»  

Maintain repair logs, documenting all preventive and corrective aircraft maintenance. 

»  

Conduct routine and special inspections as required by regulations. 

»  

Examine and inspect aircraft components, including landing gear, hydraulic systems, and deicers to locate cracks, breaks, leaks, or other problems. 

»  

Inspect airframes for wear or other defects. 

»  

Maintain, repair, and rebuild aircraft structures, functional components, and parts such as wings and fuselage, rigging, hydraulic units, oxygen systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, gaskets, and seals. 

»  

Measure the tension of control cables. 

»  

Replace or repair worn, defective, or damaged components, using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment. 

»  

Measure parts for wear, using precision instruments.
