Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.

Qualifications required?

Level 8 Honours Bachelor Degree

Typical entry routes:

The professional qualification in social work is the National Qualification in Social Work (NQSW). Awarded since 1993 it is a widely recognised qualification allowing Irish social workers to work in many different countries. It is an integrated academic and professional training, with a substantial part of the training based on practice placements.

Undergraduate courses

Undergraduate courses are 4-years+ full time and combine an academic social science degree with professional social work training.

Postgraduate courses

All postgraduate courses are 2 years full time. Entry to courses requires a 3-year Social Science degree, or a non-Social Science degree coupled with a transitional postgraduate diploma in social policy. A degree in the following subjects can increase your chances of acceptance into a postgraduate social work course: Social Science, Education, Psychology, Law and Nursing. However these are not essential as social work is open to all graduates. A minimum 2:2 honours is often needed for entry into a postgraduate course in social work.

NOTE: Social Workers are now required to apply for registration with CORU, the body charged with regulating health and social care professionals in Ireland.

The deadline of 31 May 2013 is particularly critical for those social workers who hold a Certificate of Qualification in Social Work (CQSW) or a National Qualification in Social Work (NQSW) - historical qualifications of the profession. CORU has advised these social workers and their employers that their qualifications will not be accepted after this date. If they do not apply before 31 May they may not be able to register.
