In Brief... Animator

 Brief Description:

Brings animation and cartoons to life on both film and video following a pre-planned storyboard. They use drawing, modelling or computer graphics to make pictures and models come to life in order to entertain and/or inform people.

'The Simpson's', 'Tom and Jerry' and all those Disney movies with ants and bugs in them were created with the help of animators. These cartoon type productions use animation to bring them to life, to give them depth and movement.

The Animator is an artist. He/she draws the multitude of pictures needed to make a single character appear to smile or wink. The pictures are then transferred onto film and tape and an animated cartoon is born. Animators use lots of colour and bold shapes to exaggerate their work. They work according to a storyboard or follow a director's instructions.

Ireland has a great reputation for artists not least among them animators. There are several colleges offering courses in animation. Like any art form, practice is important. Building up a portfolio is essential to apply for the relevant courses.
