In Brief... Architect

 Brief Description:

Designs, plans and directs the construction of buildings of all kinds and sizes. They also design changes to existing buildings.

An Architect can be hired by an individual, a company or an organisation, to put together the plans and designs needed by a builder to construct a building. Architects design every type of construction, from house extensions to the whole house itself, from beach huts to skyscrapers and from a garage to an industrial complex. They concern themselves with the appearance, functionality and safety aspects of each new construction.

The Architect is responsible for all aspects of the process. They discuss the plans with the client, arrange for any planning permission and building requirements that are needed and work with the builders and other contractors to ensure that the construction happens on time and for the right price.


Personal Attributes: creative, imaginative, drawing ability, technical skill, able to take responsibility.

Typical tasks undertaken in this profession: 12

Consult with client to determine functional and spatial requirements of structure.

Prepare scale drawings.

Plan layout of project.

Prepare information regarding design, structure specifications, materials, color, equipment, estimated costs, or construction time.

Integrate engineering element into unified design.

Prepare contract documents for building contractors. 

»  

Direct activities of workers engaged in preparing drawings and specification documents. 

»  

Conduct periodic on-site observation of work during construction to monitor compliance with plans. 

»  

Seek new work opportunities through marketing, writing proposals, or giving presentations. 

»  

Administer construction contracts.
