 Brief Description:

Works with iron or steel to create objects such as iron gates, grills, railings, candlesticks, light fixtures, furniture, sculpture, tools and horseshoes.


Also known as "Farriery", covers the care and management of horses with a knowledge of the most relevant local breeds, horsemanship, equine anatomy, physiology, movement and foot balance is essential.



Typical tasks undertaken in this profession: 13

»  

Measure and inspect machined parts to ensure conformance to product specifications. 

»  

Read work orders or blueprints to determine specified tolerances and sequences of operations for machine setup. 

»  

Start machines to produce sample workpieces, and observe operations to detect machine malfunctions and to verify that machine setups conform to specifications. 

»  

Remove dies from machines when production runs are finished. 

»  

Turn handles or knobs to set pressures and depths of ram strokes and to synchronize machine operations. 

»  

Confer with other workers about machine setups and operational specifications. 

»  

Repair, maintain, and replace parts on dies. 

»  

Set up, operate, or tend presses and forging machines to perform hot or cold forging by flattening, straightening, bending, cutting, piercing, or other operations to taper, shape, or form metal. 

»  

Position and move metal wires or workpieces through a series of dies that compress and shape stock to form die impressions. 

»  

Install, adjust, and remove dies, synchronizing cams, forging hammers, and stop guides, using overhead cranes or other hoisting devices, and hand tools.

Leaving Certificate + Relevant experience. Level 6 Cert or greater recommended

Typical entry routes:

Apprenticeship with a qualified farrier. The Irish School of Farriery is situated on the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE) campus, Kildare Town, Co. Kildare. It was established to provide formal training for Irish based farriers. The farriery courses held at the school are ratified by the Irish Farriery Authority. Trainees attending the school receive tuition in the theoretical aspects of farriery as well as practical skills. The aim of the school is to train apprentice farriers to a European standard, allow existing farriers access to training and provide seminars and short courses for horse owners click here.
