In Brief... Biochemist

 Brief Description:

Studies the chemistry of animals and plants and analyses their cells and tissues.

Biochemists study natural process like nutrition and fermentation. They analyse the actions of substances like vitamins and drugs on plant and animal life. They research and study the way living things work.

Some Biochemists work in industrial organisations. Here they develop new chemicals to combat plant and animal diseases. Some work with pharmaceutical and food companies. Others specialise in areas like agriculture and medicine helping with the treatment of both animals and people.

A primary degree in science with Biochemistry or similar as a major subject is necessary. After that most of the training that a Biochemist does is through practical experience in a company or laboratory. Biochemistry involves a lot of attention to detail and therefore demands good concentration and patience.

Personal Attributes: accurate, scientific approach, patient, enquiring mind.

Typical tasks undertaken in this profession: 23

Prepare reports and recommendations based upon research outcomes. 

»  

Develop new methods to study the mechanisms of biological processes. 

»  

Manage laboratory teams, and monitor the quality of a team's work. 

»  

Share research findings by writing scientific articles and by making presentations at scientific conferences. 

»  

Develop and execute tests to detect diseases, genetic disorders, or other abnormalities. 

»  

Develop and test new drugs and medications intended for commercial distribution. 

»  

Study the mutations in organisms that lead to cancer and other diseases. 

»  

Study spatial configurations of submicroscopic molecules such as proteins, using x-rays and electron microscopes. 

»  

Study the chemistry of living processes, such as cell development, breathing and digestion, and living energy changes such as growth, aging, and death. 

»  

Determine the three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules.
