In Brief... Auditor

 Brief Description:

An Auditor is a Professional Accountant who has undergone further post qualification training.

Auditors are required to examine organisations accounts to establish that they have been prepared correctly.

Limited companies are required by law to have their accounts audited each year. The Auditor usually visits the company and checks through the accounts for errors in procedure and fact. The Auditor may have to examine individual transactions and trace the source and movement of money and assets in great detail. Familiarity with modern computer packages is becoming essential. The auditor is responsible for the accurate assessment of a company's financial position, and may report to management and shareholders.

Given that Auditing requires accounting ability and discipline, a potential candidate for this career would need to have high numerical and mathematical aptitude. The work is usually office based.


Typical tasks undertaken in this profession: 20

»  

Collect and analyze data to detect deficient controls, duplicated effort, extravagance, fraud, or non-compliance with laws, regulations, and management policies. 

»  

Prepare detailed reports on audit findings. 

»  

Supervise auditing of establishments, and determine scope of investigation required. 

»  

Report to management about asset utilization and audit results, and recommend changes in operations and financial activities. 

»  

Inspect account books and accounting systems for efficiency, effectiveness, and use of accepted accounting procedures to record transactions. 

»  

Examine records and interview workers to ensure recording of transactions and compliance with laws and regulations. 

»  

Examine and evaluate financial and information systems, recommending controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity. 

»  

Review data about material assets, net worth, liabilities, capital stock, surplus, income, and expenditures. 

»  

Confer with company officials about financial and regulatory matters. 

»  

Examine whether the organization's objectives are reflected in its management activities, and whether employees understand the objectives.

Study is possible through day-release, block-release, full-time study or distance learning depending on the professional body and your employer. Most applicants have a Business Degree qualification.
