Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Peter Clifford from An Garda Síochána to give some advice for people considering this job:
|To get physically fit for the entrance tests and also for the demanding physical nature of the job. Also I would tell people to enjoy themselves before they join as it’s a job for at least 30 years.
I would also informl people about the variety of avenues people can get into when they have completed their training. There really is a career for every person regardless of where their interests lie. There is so many specialised units and prospects.

Certificates at this level are typically awarded for two years of full-time study after the leaving certificate or equivalent. Skills developed are mostly technical and vocationally specific, i.e. are focused on a specific career sector. National apprenticeships programmes are included in thhis level.
Awards at this level recognised by the National Framework of Qualifications may lead to 3rd level progression opportunities.
Qualifications at this level prepare for occupations that involve using the skills and knowledge learned alongside existing workers in 'real world' environments. Examples include restaurant managers, electricians, engineering technicians, legal secretaries, hairdressers, and web developers.
Electronic engineering, like electrical engineering, is concerned with electrical systems. However, electronic engineering is more concerned with light current systems, where electricity is used as a carrier of information, such as in computers, televisions, mp3 players, etc.
This course includes subjects such as mathematics, analogue and digital electronics, telecommunications, industrial control systems, computer systems and programming, electronics systems, industrial studies, and communications. There are follow-on Level 7 and 8 degrees available.
