Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Anne Nutley from Bank of Ireland to give some advice for people considering this job:
Anyone considering this job would need to be patient, warm, a good listener and customer focused. However in the long run what you need most of all is common sense.
If you are considering returning to the work force don't sell yourself short. Remember all the life experience you have acquired rearing a family and running a household.
Believe in yourself and go for it!

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.
This multi-disciplinary course provides a comprehensive foundation of physical science, mathematics, electronics, measurement technology and information technology on which a range of specialist instrument engineering modules are developed. There is a continual emphasis throughout the course on the design standards and best practice relevant to instrument engineering.
Instrument Engineering is the multi-disciplinary specialisation centred on the principles of operation and applications of the diverse instrumentation used to measure, control and automate processes and systems throughout industry and society. Within process industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food, beverages and water, instrument engineering contributes significantly to quality, safety, productivity and efficiency.

Graduates typically work as Instrument Engineers or Automation Engineers within chemical, pharmaceutical, oil/gas, food, beverage and water treatment companies that use instrumentation to improve productivity, safety, reliability, quality, etc.
Significant employment opportunities exist for graduates in the many companies that design, manufacture and supply instrumentation to the above industries as well as with the engineering consultancies and systems integrators who provide such industries with turn-key solutions to their manufacturing challenges.
