Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Lorcan Kelly from Irish Tax Institute to give some advice for people considering this job:
|I would strongly recommend a career in tax to any students who are considering it. Tax professionals are in high demand from employers and can add real value to any business. It is a challenging and rewarding career which can place you at the heart of business decision making. It can also be an excellent springboard to other careers in finance.
Just recently a new Chief Financial Officer was appointed to Irish Distillers who was formerly the Pernod Ricard Group tax director! Also do your research about the AITI Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) qualification – from my own experience, the course is very practical and relevant to my day to day job. It provides a structured framework for achieving the knowledge of tax law and skills required to be an AITI Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA).

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.
The professional social care sector is a hugely important service working to provide support, advocacy and guidance for the most vulnerable in society. Typically, a social care worker is employed in areas such as working with people with disabilities, young people at risk, children who have been neglected or abused and elderly people, in settings as diverse as residential care, day care, and community based services.
This four-year programme provides graduates with the skills and expertise to work effectively within the interdisciplinary environment of the social care service provision. The programme was designed with the cooperation of the HSE and voluntary agencies and includes a variety of teaching, learning and assessment methodologies such as discussions, group projects, placements, facilitations, poster displays, problem-based learning and case studies. Students go on two Supervised Professional Practice Placements in a variety of social care settings in Year 2 and Year 3 where they apply theory to practice and gain skills to prepare them for the workplace. A dedicated Professional Practice Coordinator guides and supports students through this process.

Graduates will be able to take up front line positions in a diverse range of social care services and will act as a base for project coordination, supervision and management. Typical positions will be secured in residential services (adolescent, vulnerable older people), community development, family support, community child-care and community disability services.
