Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Liam Dowling from St. Michael's House to give some advice for people considering this job:
Do your homework, ask about it - there is lots of infomation out there. You need to be person centred, social, not afraid to mix and to have an understanding of disability or at least be prepared to learn about it.
People with an Intellectual Disability ARE NOT SICK , but they can get sick like everyone else and sometimes I feel people outside don't fully understand this. They don't just need Gods help. They need the help of qualified people that want to understand them so that their needs are met and they have chance to enjoy their life as much as is possible.

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.
This course gives you an opportunity to study the histories and theories of modern and contemporary art and design practice in a creative art school setting. This programme is suitable for anyone with a broad interest in history, culture, and society. There will be opportunities to work with studio-based NCAD students, this engagement may take the form of critical/professional writing and publication projects, curation and event development.
A portfolio submission is not required; places are allocated through the CAO based on Leaving Certificate points.

As a consequence of the breadth and depth of understanding and experience acquired in relation to modern and contemporary visual and material culture, Visual Culture graduates have a wide range of local and international opportunities open to them, including: arts administration (in contemporary and heritage contexts); publishing, journalism, critical writing; work in museums and private galleries; or pure art and design historical research and lecturing.
Future career opportunities also include exhibition curation, critical writing, journalism, publishing and arts management.
