We asked Marie O'Donovan from CRH plc to give some advice for people considering this job:
You should possibly consider studying environmental science or environmental engineering in third level.
You would also need to consider if you would like do quite a bit of driving during your day and to be able to oragnise your own work plans as both these things are important.

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.
This course is designed to allow for broader entry to the undergraduate ab initio Level 8 Science programs of, Bioanalytical Science, Food Science and Nutrition or Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Science at LYIT. This new course proposal will give you the opportunity to have a year to decide which area of science appeals to you and to then pursue this in years 2 to 4. At the end of year 1, subject to the availability of places you can decide which course to chose from one of the following; Bioanalytical Science, Food Science and Nutrition or Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Science.

On successful completion of year 1 of this course students can progress to year 2 of one of the following programmes BSc Honours in Bioanalytical Science, BSc Honours in Food Science and Nutrition or BSc Honours in Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Science subject to availability of places. Graduates from this programme may also pursue further studies to Masters or Doctoral level at other Universities in Ireland or abroad.
