Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Paul Galvan from Department of Education and Skills to give some advice for people considering this job:
|I would advise them to ensure they enjoy working with young people. If possible try to get some teaching experience; I started out as a substitute teacher before applying for my H Dip in Education.|

Certificates at this level are typically awarded for two years of full-time study after the leaving certificate or equivalent. Skills developed are mostly technical and vocationally specific, i.e. are focused on a specific career sector. National apprenticeships programmes are included in thhis level.
Awards at this level recognised by the National Framework of Qualifications may lead to 3rd level progression opportunities.
Qualifications at this level prepare for occupations that involve using the skills and knowledge learned alongside existing workers in 'real world' environments. Examples include restaurant managers, electricians, engineering technicians, legal secretaries, hairdressers, and web developers.
This programme of study is designed to equip students with a solid grounding in business and in particular, Marketing and Management.
It covers the practical skills, knowledge and competence required at junior executive level. There are approximately 24 hours of timetabled activities per week which include lectures and tutorials as well as a range of practical learning experiences, such as, business case studies, industry project work and computer practicals; plus mid and end of year examinations.

Students prepared for positions in areas such as marketing and sales, management and administration and finance within industrial, commercial and services sectors .The ladder-style of this programme gives students the opportunity to study Marketing and Management at their own pace – do the first two years and receive a Higher Certificate, add one more for a Degree, and another for an Honours Degree.
Some exemptions may be available from the examinations of The Marketing Institute of Ireland (MII), The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and The Institute of International Trade of Ireland (IITI).
