Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Sarah Lynch from Bank of Ireland to give some advice for people considering this job:
I would encourage anyone who was considering a role in HR to get a HR qualification and to become a member of the CIPD.
Whilst these are not essential requirements for all starter roles in HR, they will be extremely beneficial when trying to progress from there.

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.
This course provides the knowledge and skills related to the profession of speech and language therapy. Study topics such as intellectual impairment, physical impairment, acquired neurological deficits, voice disorders and laryngectomy, autism, and language disorder. Good deal of the course involves clinical practice. Great deal of study, assignments as well as practical clinical examinations involved throughout all years.

Speech and language therapists work with people who have communication disorders, helping them to find ways to maximise their speech, language and communication skills. They also assess, diagnose and treat swallowing disorders.

|Lisa Kelly is a Speech & Language Therapist employed by the HSE. She did a 4 year degree course in Clinical Speech and Language Studies in TCD. Continuing professional development is an important part of her job. This includes attending courses that are organised to train new assessment and therapy skills and has attended several courses over the past year and a half.|
