blank Course Summary... blank

Intellectual disability nurses work closely with people with an intellectual disability and their families throughout their lives, as assistants, practitioners, educators and facilitators. As members of an interdisciplinary team of therapists, clinicians, teachers and medical personnel, ID nurses work in a person-centred way to empower clients to achieve their life goals.

Two thirds of the theoretical content of the programme is devoted to nursing studies, one-sixth to biological sciences and one sixth to social sciences. Students are trained in Cregg House, Co. Sligo.

This programme provides students with an academic and professional qualification that allows graduates to travel anywhere in the world and make a difference to the lives of people with intellectual disability.

Graduates can decide to work with individuals and groups with intellectual disabilities in the community or residential services or to work with families and other professionals. Intellectual disability nurses could gain employment in schools, respite services and supported employment agencies.

Graduate nurses often decide after they have gained some initial experience as an RNID to specialise and work with persons who have particular difficulties such as challenging behaviour, complex needs, autism spectrum disorders and dual diagnosis. Many RNIDs also chose to enter careers in research, teaching, or management.
