Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Caitriona Jackman from Smart Futures to give some advice for people considering this job:
|If you are considering full-time scientific research, try to get a work placement in a university department so you can see first hand what it’s like. It’s a relatively relaxed, flexible environment, but there is a certain degree of self-motivation needed.
So I would say you need to be able to push yourself and be proactive in terms of setting up collaborations with other scientists etc.

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.
Psychology is the scientific study of thought, emotion and behaviour. Psychologists examine the various aspects of human experience, such as human emotions, thoughts and actions. They apply their knowledge and skills in clinical, counselling, educational, organisational and academic settings.
This course allows you to follow a major course in Psychology alongside minor study in an associate humanities subject such as Sociology, Religious Studies, or a Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish).

A graduate of the BA (Honours) in Psychology will be an enthusiastic and confident practitioner, comfortable with their ability to learn and adapt to the ever-changing society. They will be ready to embark on a challenging and rewarding career in a variety of differing employment positions
