What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?
For Junior Certificate I did all subjects science, business, history, geography etc. For Leaving Certificate I choose business subjects where these were available as I had enjoyed them and had an aptitude for them. I did Geography, accountancy and business studies but not economics as this was not offered by my school.
I was fortunate in that my school had an excellent teacher for accountancy and business studies and a high percentage of students had achieved high grades because of this. I always wanted to pursue a career in accountancy and my choice of subjects reflected this. In hindsight, if the school had some excellent teachers in other subjects I may have taken these subjects but would still have gone on to do accountancy.
Having done accountancy to leaving certificate gave me a great grounding in the basics. However, I have no doubt that this could have been picked up at a later stage if I had not done it. In hindsight I wouldn't have done anything differently as my school subjects gave me a very good grounding and I really enjoyed them.
If my school had an excellent teacher in science rather than business I may have taken those subjects as it is important to gain knowledge from a good teacher than struggle with chosen subjects with a bad teacher.
