CAO points for popular courses 'likely to rise'

Monday, January 11, 2010

CAO points for popular courses 'likely to rise'Central Application Office (CAO) points for many popular university courses are likely to increase this year due to a greater number of mature students seeking college places, among other issues.

According to a report from the Irish Times, there are a number of factors putting upward pressure on CAO points, including an increase in the number of Leaving Certificate students and a directive aimed at cutting the number of staff in higher education jobs.

Many people who would have sought employment rather than a college place are also heading to university due to the tough jobs market.

In particular, it is thought that point requirements for the most popular arts, business and science courses will rise.

However, the news provider suggests points for courses linked to the building industry are likely to fall due to lack of demand, while those for law and architecture courses could see a drop due to limited employment opportunities in these areas.

The Irish Independent recently reported that it now costs an average of EUR 7,200 per year for students to attend a college away from home.

They tend to enjoy clerical and most forms of office work, where they perform essential administrative duties. They often form the backbone of large and small organisations alike. They may enjoy being in charge of office filing systems, and using computers and other office equipment to keep things running smoothly. They usually like routine work hours and prefer comfortable indoor workplaces.
