EU grant aid decision will help boost employment, says Batt O'Keeffe

A European Commission decision on regional investment rules will help create employment opportunities in the mid-western region, the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation has said.
The decision means that a large company locating to the mid-western region, which covers Limerick, Clare and north Tipperary, will be able to get grant aid of up to ten per cent of the value of their investment.
Minister Batt O'Keeffe said the ruling will help enterprise agencies to create jobs in the area.
"The ability of the government's enterprise agencies to grant-aid major investment projects in the mid-west will help us to draw firms to the region and create jobs."
Grant aid acts as a strong incentive when companies are thinking about locating to an area, he suggested.
"While skills base, corporation tax, language, and physical and digital infrastructure are the main determinants of firms’ investment decisions when they are considering rival locations, grant aid can also act as a strong incentive and add to the attractiveness of a location."
The news came as Taoiseach Brian Cowen said a EUR660 million traffic tunnel under the river Shannon in Limerick will make it easier to attract investment to the mid-western region.
