Spending plan could create 270,000 jobs, says Brian Cowen
Tuesday, July 27, 2010
Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland are aiming to generate 270,000 direct and indirect new jobs by 2016, the Taoiseach said yesterday (June 27th).
Launching Ireland's Infrastructure Investment Priorities 2010-2016, Brian Cowen said almost EUR40 billion will be invested in economic and social infrastructure over the next seven years, which will help generate employment.
The government will prioritise funding for education, public transport, enterprise and environmental services, the Taoiseach said.
Among the investments announced include funding of about EUR2.4 billion for science, technology and innovation programmes with an emphasis on the commercialisation of research efforts.
Mr Cowen said: "This investment programme is all about jobs for our people and a sustainable economic future for our children.
"We are focusing on investments which will help create sustainable jobs - by shifting resources to areas which will help Irish companies grow, and attract more foreign investment."
Commenting before the official launch, the Taoiseach said the spending plan was "exactly the type of stimulus that the economy needs to help rebuild confidence and accelerate economic recovery".
