Teachers 'facing major shake-up of how promotions are awarded'
Thursday, July 29, 2010
Interpersonal and communication skills will now play a key role in teacher promotions to middle-management, it has been reported.
According to the Irish Independent, the way teachers are promoted is facing a major shakeup from September.
Less emphasis will be placed on seniority when teachers are moving up the career ladder, which will make it more difficult for them to predict when to expect a promotion.
Instead, the new system, which is being phased in at second level from the new school year, will use five criteria to decide which teachers will be promoted; including interpersonal and communication skills, having the ability to relate to the needs of the job and being able to contribute to the overall organisation and management of the school, the newspaper reported.
The news comes just weeks after the Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan, announced a partial easing of the promotions embargo in schools.
