Two top colleges have announced plans to unite in a bid to help students and their local communities.
NUI Galway and the University of Limerick will work together as part of a new regional alliance which will demonstrate how "working together means working smarter", as well as covering every aspect of college activity including teaching, research and spin-off companies.
Key features of the alliance include the creation of a medical academy at Portiuncula and Roscommon hospitals and a Link to Learn student exchange programme which will allow students at either university to choose modules from the other institution.
According to the Irish Times, Taoiseach Brian Cowen said increased collaboration among the nation's universities is "vital to upping our game in the intense ongoing global competition to come up with new ideas, new products and new services".
Last week, it was reported that Irish students from both the Republic and the North are being encouraged by the IBEC-CBI Joint Business Council and Universities Ireland to cross the border to study, helping them access more job opportunities.
