Engineering in general is an extremely broad career and can lead to you many different applications and many different parts of the world. It’s also a career which can give you a set of skills highly adaptable to other careers. In Intel the same applies. Day to day the job changes so being able to change with the job is important. Make sure you are adaptable and can apply your skills in many different situations.

The Investigative person will usually find a particular area of science to be of interest. They are inclined toward intellectual and analytical activities and enjoy observation and theory. They may prefer thought to action, and enjoy the challenge of solving problems with clever technology. They will often follow the latest developments in their chosen field, and prefer mentally stimulating environments.

Garda Trainee Recruitment Update

The closing date for applications to An Garda Síochána for the latest recruitment campaign for Garda Trainees was Wednesday 6th January 2016.

The Public Appointments Service (PAS) reports that almost 17,000 applications were received for the 600 vacancies, approximately 28 candidates  for each available place.

The competition is however less intense than last year, when more than 23,000 applied to secure one of 550 places on offer in that camapign


  • 16,651 people applied to join An Garda Síochána
  • 5,463 of the applications received were from women

As well as targeting the recruitment campaign at men and women all over Ireland and the Irish diaspora, An Garda Síochána made a significant effort to attract people from minority communities and under-represented groups to ensure An Garda Síochána reflects the changing composition of Irish society. Positive actions such as this echoes An Garda Síochána belief that equality, diversity, and human rights, are at the heart of modern policing.

By reaching out to all sectors of the community, An Garda Síohána sought to attract the brightest and best candidates to serve the community into the future – but we didn’t just stop there. In the most recent recruitment campaign, a separate recruitment stream was introduced for serving Garda Reserve members who meet all other eligibility criteria. In addition, to fulfilling its obligations under the Official Languages Act, fluent Irish speakers – who fulfill all other eligibility criteria – could also apply for consideration to a specialist Irish Language Stream.

Together, these positive measures in recruitment have demonstrated that An Garda Síochána is determined to recruit the best possible talent from a wide range of backgrounds to deliver the future of policing into the middle of the 21st Century.

What Next?

The formal testing process will now commence. The PAS will oversee four stages designed to whittle down the number of hopefuls.

Two rounds of online testing will be followed by a supervised exam and a final stage of interviews. Potential candidates will then undergo Garda vetting before being formally approved.
