I would advise anyone interested in Occupational Therapy to read up on the profession or else try to meet a qualified Occupational Therapist and talk to them about their work.

The internet can be a great resource in getting information. Also information from the universities might indicate if this is a course that is suited to you. A lot of the course work relies on you being a self-directed learner. This makes the course different to other more mainstream/academic courses as the onus is on the student to complete a lot of work independently.

As this is a caring profession an interest in working with people is a must. You also need to be a good communicator as you will be working closely with clients, families and other staff on an ongoing basis.

Organisational skills are essential to enable you to manage a caseload.


Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

An alternative to CAO for Ambitious School Leavers

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA Ireland) in partnership with Longford and Westmeath Education and Training Board (LWETB) and Cenit College launched an exciting initiative in third level education for school leavers, which provides an alternative to the CAO system for those seeking to pursue a career in accountancy.

The CPA Accounts Executive Traineeship is a one-year full time academic programme followed by a three-month training contract, in an accounting practice or an accounts department, for ambitious school leavers wishing to pursue a career as a professional accountant. On completion, students can progress to further accounting studies with CPA Ireland on a part-time basis, supplemented by three years supervised, practical training in a work environment in order to become a fully qualified accountant.

Recent research by the Irish League of Credit Unions has shown that 90% of parents with children intending to go to third level education are worried about the associated costs. However, the CPA Accounts Executive Traineeship programme is the first of its kind – a fully funded direct route into a career in accountancy for students who are, perhaps due to financial or logistical reasons, unable to attend higher education to complete a primary business or accounting qualification.The programme kicked off in September 2015 and the pilot class will take up their guaranteed three month work placements in September 2016.

The programme will be rolled out on a national scale in September 2016.

This innovation in professional accounting education was developed to provide an opportunity for anyone who has the ambition and commitment to become a professional accountant, regardless of financial or logistical limitations, an alternative to the CAO route. There is no requirement to have studied accountancy for the Leaving Certificate.

This programme will also ensure continuity in the availability of qualified accounting professionals to meet the needs of accountancy practices, SMEs and international companies wishing to base their finance teams in Ireland. Over the last 4 years, CPA have experienced 100% employment among their newly qualifieds.

Eamonn Siggins, Chief Executive of CPA Ireland explains how the Institute is expanding the options open to those who opt for a world of work over college by offering a more experiential model of training with this programme.

“Historically training in accountancy was conducted through a combination of study and work placement, and we are moving back towards that model. On completion of the one year programme, and three month work placement, students can progress to further accounting studies with CPA Ireland on a part-time basis in order to complete their professional accountancy qualification. One of the great benefits of studying to become a qualified CPA accountant is that you can do so while continuing to work fulltime and earn an income.”

Students will be eligible for this programme on attainment of specific Leaving Certificate requirements and an interview to ensure that they possess the aptitude and suitability for the CPA Accounts Executive Traineeship.

The academic element of this programme incorporates CPA approved professional tuition for the first level of the CPA qualification leading to a Certificate in Business and Accounting on completion. Significantly the course will also include a comprehensive IT and data mining and modelling module. In addition to training and accreditation for Sage Line 50, students will also cover an introduction to tax and a module on business communication skills, in order to prepare them effectively for the world of work. The training element of this programme then takes place in an accountancy practice or a business related organisation thereby giving the student an opportunity to gain applied experience in the world of accounting and business.
