ESB Power Generation (PG) with a total installed capacity of 4651 MW has been generating electricity since building the first major power plant at Arndnacrusha, Co Clare in the late 1920s. ESB PG owns and operates generating stations in the Republic of Ireland. At present, ESB PG operates 15 power stations across Ireland using peat, coal, oil and gas fuel types as well as hydro technology.

Throughout its history ESB PG has been at the leading edge of power generation technology. Now as it enters a challenging and exciting phase, ESB PG will be seeking to ensure that it remains at the forefront of electricity generation in Ireland, renewing its portfolio of plant and addressing its position within the all-Ireland market.

In order to support the power generation business, high-level engineering expertise is needed. ESB PG has a structured three-year graduate engineer development programme in place for graduate engineer recruits involving a variety of job assignments, structured off-the-job training modules and a mentoring support programme. In addition opportunities exist for engineers with a number of years experience.

The main engineering roles involve:

  • the operations and maintenance of power stations;
  • specialist engineering services;
  • project engineering;
  • energy management and trading.

ESB Networks
is the owner of the high voltage transmission system and the owner and operator of the medium and lower voltage distribution system. It provides services to all electricity customers and all generators and suppliers of electricity in the Republic of Ireland including:
  • connection to the network;
  • reading meters and passing these readings to the different supply companies;
  • restoring supply in cases of interruptions and emergencies.

ESB Networks offers employment in a variety of roles located at main ESB Networks branch centres and at Head Office in Dublin. The engineering opportunities are in technical, specialist and management fields. ESB Networks has a structured three-year graduate engineer development programme in place for graduate engineer recruits involving a variety of job assignments.

ESB International (ESBI) is responsible for the non-regulated businesses in the ESB group. ESBI builds, owns and operates power stations, as well as providing a full range of engineering and consultancy services to clients in the power sector worldwide. With over 1,000 staff, ESBI's expertise covers all aspects of energy projects, from concept to development to operation and maintenance. To date ESBI has carried out projects in over 115 countries. ESBI has a proven track record in investing and running major power projects and is a trusted partner in the industry.

ESB Customer Supply & Group Services operates as the Public Electricity Supplier offering a supply of electricity to over 2 million mainly residential customers in the Republic of Ireland retail market on terms approved by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER).

Group Services is responsible for a number of unregulated activities and internal services for the various business lines within the ESB Group including the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Group, ESB Telecoms Ltd., ESB Contracts Ltd. and internal services for the ESB Group.
