Organisation Profile
The headquarters of An Garda Síochána is based in the Phoenix Park, Dublin 8.

The general management and control of the Service is the responsibility of the Commissioner who is appointed by the Government. The Commissioner is responsible to the Government through the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

In addition to the Commissioner, the Garda Service has two Deputy Commissioners and nine Assistant Commissioners. One Deputy Commissioner is in charge of Operations, while the other has responsibility for Strategy and Change Management.

Six of the Assistant Commissioners are in command of Regions, one is in command of National Support Services and two Assistant Commissioners are based at Garda Headquarters in charge of the various sections namely:
  • Human Resource Management
  • Crime and Security
  • Traffic
  • Strategy and Services

The ranks in descending order from Assistant Commissioner together with the total number of personnel in each rank are:-
  • Chief Superintendent (41)
  • Superintendent (153)
  • Inspector (294)
  • Sergeant (1,903)
  • Garda (10,927)
For operational effectiveness the organisation is structured on a regional basis, of which there are six. Each Region is sub-divided into Divisions, each commanded by a Chief Superintendent. Each Division is sub-divided into Districts with a Superintendent in charge. There are twenty-five Divisions and one hundred and nine Districts in the State.
