Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Nan Hu from An Garda Síochána to give some advice for people considering this job:
|I would advise those considering the job to be patient and to be good at what you are doing and when the opportunity comes to join An Garda Siochana just take it!.
If you are part of a minority group in Ireland and considering joining An Garda Síochána then my advice to you is to go for it because as a foreign national working in the organisation I promise there is no discrimination in An Garda Síochána.

John Traynor , Development Analyst
John Traynor works as a Development Analyst at CRH in Belgard Castle in Dublin. He holds a B.Eng in Electronic Engineering from DCU and a M.Sc Electronic Engineering from Trinity College. He did an MBA in the Smurfit Business School in 2007, which allowed him to change roles completely and move away from a purely engineering role and get more involved in the business functions of new company in a new industry.
Physics, History, Geography, and French were my options for my Leaving Cert. Physics was one of the subjects that I was most interested in school, and this had a lot of influence on my decision to study electronic engineering in college.
B.Eng Electronic Engineering 2000
M.Sc Electronic Engineering 2005
CRH provides a number of training courses for people at different points in their career. I will be attending a Management Development Programme this year, which is aimed at people with 2-5 years experience in the company.
Having an MBA was a prerequisite for my job. My job requires a strong understanding of many subjects including Accounting, Finance, Strategy. The MBA has given me good understanding of these subjects which I can build on over my career.
