Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Nan Hu from An Garda Síochána to give some advice for people considering this job:
|I would advise those considering the job to be patient and to be good at what you are doing and when the opportunity comes to join An Garda Siochana just take it!.
If you are part of a minority group in Ireland and considering joining An Garda Síochána then my advice to you is to go for it because as a foreign national working in the organisation I promise there is no discrimination in An Garda Síochána.

Richard Storey, Shift Manager
Richard Storey is a Shift Manager working with McDonalds in the Navan Road. Following his Leaving Cert he embarked on a two year Sports Therapy course. McDonalds have sent him on a number of management courses and he plans to take some additional courses this year to enhance his management skills.
In school I studied the basic subjects, English, Irish, Maths. I also took French Physics and Biology. These subjects stood to me in my course choice as Biology is essential in understanding how the body works when undertaking a fitness course. As we have come into difficult times recently people have zipped up their pockets and are not renewing their gym memberships, therefore leaving me struggling to obtain a job in this industry. If I could change anything I would have opted for a trade in carpentry or an electrician.
Secondary education. Junior and Leaving Cert. Third Level. Two year course in Sports Therapy studying a range of subjects including: Fitness Instruction, Fitness Studio Teaching, Personal Training, Sports Therapy, Aromatherapy Holisic Massage and Stability Ball training .
I have upskilled by taking part in management courses to help with my management skills and training. I plan on undertaking further courses this year to expand my management knowledge.
English Physics and Maths would help with my job as they allow you to think logically as a manager and figure out a problem which may arise on your shift.
