Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Liam Doyle from Failte Ireland to give some advice for people considering this job:
|Don’t give up easily, because there’ll be many obstacles or roadblocks placed in your way. If you enjoy challenges, you’ll enjoy the hotel industry. It is physically and mentally very challenging but also extraordinarily rewarding, a lot more than most other industries, providing you’re willing to stay the course!|

Mark Spain , Garda Trainee
Mark left his job in the Civil Service where he had worked for seven years to join An Garda Síochána at age 29. He was also a member of The Garda Reserve prior to beginning his studies in Templemore which he highly advocates for giving the best insight into the work of the Gardaí.
Engineering / Physics / Construction / French.
I'd like to think these gave me a good ability to solve problems as well as helping me to have a good hands on approach to things.
Leaving Certificate. National Certificate in Business Computing from LIT and a certificate in physical fitness and conditioning for sport from Setanta College.
It would be hard to pin point if any particular aspect has been overly important. I think my time working in the Garda College and working in the Garda Reserve has been the most important.
We can't apply for courses while in training but I would be interested in family liaison training as it is so important to families stricken by crime.
