The Health Service Executive (HSE) is the organisation with responsibility for delivering health and social services to people living in the Republic of Ireland. The HSE provides thousands of different services in hospitals and communities across the country.
These services range from midwives delivering babies to public health nurses caring for older people in the community, from caring for children with challenging behaviour to educating people how to live healthier lives; from performing highly-complex brain surgery to planning for major emergencies; from controlling the spread of infectious diseases to treating patients with cancer. At some stage every year, everybody in Ireland will use one or more of the services provided. They are of vital importance to the entire population.
The HSE is the largest employer in the country with over 100,000 employees. The HSE manages services through a structure designed to put patients and clients at the centre of the organisation. In addition, the HSE funds a large number of Voluntary Hospitals and Agencies who provide health and social services throughout Ireland.
