The current situation is that many skilled construction workers, professionals and trades persons are emigrating to secure employment. The result of this is a substantial loss of skills base and expertise in the construction sector, especially in design and building.

The majority of persons employed in the Irish construction sector today are Irish, with 92 percent recorded as Irish nationals. Approximately 50,000 non-Irish Nationals worked in construction in Ireland in 2007. At the end of 2011, this figure had shrunk to 9,000.
