Defence Forces personnel can be required to serve overseas at any time during their career.

Serving personnel can normally expect to be selected for overseas service every three (3) years. Missions vary from four (4) months to twenty-four (24) months in duration.

Officer Cadet
in the Defence Forces

  • Be Nationals of an EEA State*

                               OR

  • Be Nationals of any other State who are lawfully present in Ireland and have five (5) years lawful residence in Ireland**

* Member States of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland

** Having a period of one (1) years continous residence in the state immediately prior to the closing date of the application for a Cadetship in the year of competition and during eight (8) years immediately preceding that period have had a total residence in the state amounting to four (4) years. Periods of illegal residence of an asylum seeker do not count in the qualifying period.

Be not less than seventeen (17) years of age and under twenty-eight (28) of age on the 01 of October in the competition year.
 

General Service Position in the Defence Forces

  • Be Nationals of an EEA State*

                               OR

  • Minimum of three (3) years legal and unbroken residency in Ireland and have a valid work permit for five (7) years.

Be not less than seventeen (17) years of age and under twenty-Five(25) of age on the day of enlistment.

* Member States of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland

Apprenticeship in the Defence Forces

  • Be ordinarily resident in Ireland.
