Nora Barry, Education Profile

What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?
In Leaving Cert I chose to study French, German, Physics and Chemistry. The languages are relevant to my current career, where there is an emphasis on languages and communication. On hindsight, it would have been very useful to have studied History, as an in-depth knowledge of the past would be helpful.

The Sciences I believe, though not obviously applicable, did aid me in the development of analytical and logical thinking.

What is your education to date?
Leaving Certificate in Eureka Secondary School, Kells, Co. Meath.

Bachelor of Education in St Patricks College, Drumcondra, Dublin 9.

Have you undertaken, or do you plan to undertake any further training as part of your job?
I am currently studying the Bunchúrsa Modúlach in Gaeleagras to develop my ability to communicate effectively 'as Gaeilge'. I plan to attend Speech Writing and foreign language courses and in the future I hope to study for a Masters in International Relations or Politics.

What aspects of your education have proven most important for your job?
My degree course was broad and offered the opportunity to study an Arts subject in conjunction with Education. I chose English, which certainly proves advantageous in my current position as communication both oral and written is of paramount importance.

Classroom Management was a very practical module, that taught organisational skills which I continue to apply today. Teaching practice was particularly relevant, as it required planning, effective communication and decision making under pressure, while under observation.
