What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?
For my Leaving Certificate I did English, Irish, Maths, French, Geography, Home Economics, Economics and Physics. In hindsight I would have done nothing differently, as there are no really ideal subjects for a career in An Garda Síochána.
What is your education to date?
After completing my Leaving Certificate, I completed a Diploma in International Hotel Management and Business with French.
What aspects of your education have proven most important for your job?
The Hotel Management Diploma I completed will stand to me in every aspect of the current position in An Garda Síochána. It instilled in me professionalism and attention to detail. It also developed my ability to deal with the public. These are all critical aspects of my role as a Guard.
Have you undertaken, or do you plan to undertake any further training as part of your job?
There are numerous courses available within the organisation to help you progress your career. From driving courses and firearms courses to specific training in the specialist area you work in such as HGV examination courses, and training on how to use the Stinger device to stop cars.
