James Ryan, Education Profile

What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?
English, Irish, Maths, French, Business, Chemistry, Physics. As I was quiet good at chemistry and physics I researched some courses in college that included such subjects. I thought about choosing something like chemistry or biochemistry but decided I wanted something more practical and after a bit of research I choose chemical and process engineering. This course had the chemistry and physics but also alot more. Also I enjoyed business in school and the course I choose had several modules in marketing and finance throughout the four years. These qualifications then lead me to an engineering role in Medite who are part of coillte panel products because they are continually trying to improve and add to their engineering resources.

What is your education to date?

Primary: Monard N.S. Tipperary

Secondary Leaving Certificate: Abbey C.B.S. Tipperary

University College Cork: Process and Chemical Engineering Degree

Work Experience: Boston Scientific Galway (Chemical analysis and engineering)

Post Degree: Medite-Europe (graduate engineer 2 year programme with the second year in Smartply, Waterford). Both are part of Coillte panel products.

What aspects of your education have proven most important for your job?

In secondary school my best subjects were chemistry, physics and business and through some research this lead me to undertaking a degree in chemical and process engineering. There are a lot of job opportunities with a degree in chemical engineering and Medite-Europe (part of Coillte panel products) were recruiting for such a position around the time I had just finished.

With this degree you learn a  ot about process optimistion, control and design and these have proven most important for my current job to date. Also I play a lot of sports and this is a different type of education where you learn to communicate and work as a team.

Have you undertaken, or do you plan to undertake any further training as part of your job?

Every day at work I learn something new and I think in the age we are in it is important to continuously learn and train to make yourself a better person and a bigger asset for whom your working for.

I would consider doing an evening course to improve some of my skills if that was necessary for my job because I think you can never have enough training.  Medite are willing to finance evening courses for any employee because at the end of the day it will benefit the company as well as the individual.
