Some may think that you can go untrained into fishing. The best advice I would give people considering fishing as a profession is to get training. Fishing is an all encompassing career - when you need to go fishing, the rest of your life goes on hold unfortunately. It is very unpredictabe because you could be fishing non stop for three weeks and tied up for two.

Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

The Interest Profiler is a really useful assessment exercise. Completing the exercise will highlight what occupations would be most suited to you. It takes about 15 minutes to complete and will generate an eight page career interest report that is unique for you.

How do I complete the Interest Profiler?

To complete your personal Interest Profiler, start by signing up to and creating your on-line career file. This file can then be accessed from any machine anywhere. It will allow you to save up to 10 documents (e.g. CV, Cover Letter etc.) and complete a Personality Assessment in relation to what careers might suit you. You can also save Occupations of interest to you, details of related PLC and CAO courses that you think you would enjoy and also provides you with access to an array of useful information on study and career skills.

I heard of my current job from an advertisment on the University of Limerick careers brochure.

I sent in my CV via email, and recieved notification shortly afterwards that I was being selected for an interview.

I attended the 1st interview and was interviewed by the then Works Engineer and two representatives for HR.

The second interview was with the Works Manager and the HR Manager for the group. Both interviews were relaxed overall, but questions were still tough.

I felt the main objective of both interviews was to extract what type of person I was, my personality traits, and how I would "fit" into the organisation.

I was told I was successful over the phone by a HR represenative from Irish Cement.
