I saw the position advertised in the local paper, filled in an application form and was called for an interview.
Communication skills are very important in my line of work so I was set the task of doing a presentation at the interview stage. I was then given scenarios to deal with and asked about my previous experience.
I also sat a computer literacy test. I was delighted when I got a letter offering me the position.
Describe a typical day?
One of the good things about my job is that it is very diverse and two days are rarely the same.
At the moment I am working with a group of young people, teaching them how to plan, shoot and edit a short film. I’m also working with a teacher training college exploring the use of visitor centres as a teaching resource.
I could be teaching forces to five year olds before lunch and hosting a stem cell debate with adults after lunch. It is a challenge to adapt your level of language and the team works to tight deadlines.
I usually spend some time at my desk each day, answering emails and doing general administration.
What are the main tasks and responsibilities?
I am employed to manage the design and delivery of a programme of workshops, shows and events hosted by W5.
What are the main challenges?
The main challenges are adapting to different visitors and the time constraints involved in developing and delivering major projects. I often find myself juggling several projects.
What's cool?
I really like the creative aspect of the job. We get to work with a very varied range of people and equipment to design unique events and workshops.
What's not so cool?
There will always be paperwork to complete. It's not the most interesting requirement of my position.
What particular skills do you bring to your workplace?
To work in the Education team at W5 you need to be able to communicate with people at ALL levels.
We have a very varied range of visitors, from nursery children to undergraduate students. You need to be adaptable rather than a specialist.
We look for creative people who are energetic and enthusiastic about learning new skills.
