In October 2013, a Science Foundation Ireland funded research centre, AMBER (Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research) was launched. AMBER is jointly hosted in TCD by CRANN and the Trinity Centre for Bioenineering, and works in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and UCC.

The centre provides a partnership between leading researchers in material science and industry to develop new materials and devices for a range of sectors, particularly the ICT, medical devices and industrial technology sectors.

Placement Details

Each year, AMBER coordinates two week-long programmes for Transition Year (TY) students. Exploring Materials takes place each Spring and Autumn. Exploring Materials lets 15 students from around the country experience what it's like to work in AMBER for a week. We select students who are particularly interested in pursuing science as a career and can only take one student from each school.

In March 2015 15 students from around Ireland took part in our “Exploring Materials” TY experience. The students visited PhD researchers in their labs in CRANN, at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, St James's Hospital and at our Advanced Microscopy Laboratory where they had an opportunity to operate some of the world’s most advanced microscopes.

Students will have the opportunity to experience:

  • Tours
  • Experiments
  • Lectures
  • Workshops
