Administrative people are interested in work that offers security and a sense of being part of a larger process. They may be at their most productive under supervisors who give clear guidelines and while performing routine tasks in a methodical and reliable way.

They tend to enjoy clerical and most forms of office work, where they perform essential administrative duties. They often form the backbone of large and small organisations alike. They may enjoy being in charge of office filing systems, and using computers and other office equipment to keep things running smoothly. They usually like routine work hours and prefer comfortable indoor workplaces.

Programme Overview:

The Accounting Technician Apprenticeship, launched in September 2017, is a new pathway to a career in business, accountancy and finance, where apprentices are mentored through a two-year, work-based learning programme.

Leading companies from practice, industry and public sector will be recruiting.

Accounting Technician Apprentices work four days a week with a registered employer and study one day a week with a local college, on a two-year contract.

Apprentices get paid a salary of at least €19,000 per annum and their college tuition is fully funded by SOLAS. They are entitled to three weeks paid study leave per year.

The programme leads to a Level 6 QQI Advanced Certificate in Accounting.

For the Accounting Technician Apprenticeship Programme an apprentice will be attending (off-the-job training) at college one day and working with an employer four daysduring college term time (on the job training) on a weekly basis. Outside of college term an apprentice will attend work five days a week.

The (off-the-job training) day is set by the college but usually will be a Monday from 9:00am to 6.00pm and an employer will allocate appropriate work hours for the four days (on-the-job training) not exceeding the 37.5 hours per week (on and off the job training) required to be completed by the apprentice for the programme and their employment contract.

Additional home study will be needed to ensure success in the programme.

For the first year in college, the Stage 1 modules they will be studying are:

  • Financial Accounting
  • Taxation
  • Law and Ethics
  • Business Management

For the second year in college, the Stage 2 modules they will be studying are:

  • Advanced Financial Accounting
  • Advanced Taxation
  • Management Accounting
  • Integrated Accounting Systems

Assessment of progress and achievements is carried out by a combination of two strategies:

  • Exams for each module will take place in May for each year.
  • There will also be a requirement to complete two work based submissions per module. There will be two submission periods each year to submit four completed work based tasks.

Successful graduates of the apprenticeship programme may then progress on to full Accountancy with Chartered Accountants Ireland or one of the other professional accountancy bodies.
