In a job like this, your communication and interpersonal skills could be tested to the limit. (It could also be useful if you enjoy foreign languages, or at least you are willing to learn.)
It's also a job for people with a lot of energy. You'll have to work long hours and be happy to work when other people are enjoying their free time. You'll also be on your feet a lot - this isn't the kind of management job that can be done from behind a desk. It is important to have a business sense and have good organisational skills. As a manager you should have skills in leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and dispute resolution.
As a manager you must be able to give clear instructions and motivate staff to work precisely and consistently. A cheerful but firm, authoritative manner is necessary. You need to be able to work within agreed budgets, time frames and to plan and prioritise work. Managers need to understand the policies and priorities of their company.
Entry Requirements - Restaurant / Catering Manager
One way of becoming a Catering/Restaurant Manager is to get a lower level job and work your way up. This is a common and respected way of reaching management in this industry. As you work your way up, you will have to study for appropriate qualifications and it will be a good idea to get experience in different areas - for example, bar work, kitchen, waiter/waitress, restaurant supervisor and administration.
There are hundreds of courses available across Ireland to help you get started in the Tourism and Hospitality Sector. If full-time education doesn’t suit, you can also avail of some great apprenticeship programmes in the industry.
Courses in restaurant and hospitality management from certificate right up to master level, can help you get started. Level 4, 5 & 6 courses in Hospitality Operations for example, can be found at the Further Education Institutes and ETB centres nationally.
