Interested in an engineering career? Take the road less travelled
Irish companies are urgently seeking new recruits in a number of construction-related jobs, such as architecture and structural engineering, and to date, CAO applications for Level 8 courses in Built Environment and Architecture have increased. Another high-demand area is for Building Engineers, who design the internal infrastructure of a building.
Ciara Ahern, Head of Building Engineering at DIT explains, Our Level 8 course in Building Engineering (DT026) is the only course of its kind in Ireland and there are not enough students to meet strong industry demand. DIT has an open access policy to education students can also access the system at apprenticeship level and without honours maths. If you want in, there is a way says Ciara, some of our best students are those that access the system at apprenticeship level and ordinary degree level, we welcome all prospective students and encourage all to apply.
Build a career in quantity surveying
Quantity and Building Surveyors continue to be in short supply with the shortage reflected in the wages they can command A 2016 survey by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland said the average yearly salary for a surveyor was €71,000. DIT offers a four-year honours degree in Quantity Surveying & Construction Economics (DT111), where students will be equipped with detailed knowledge and understanding of the framework within which the construction industry operates.

Food innovation and research have been identified by Enterprise Ireland as a national priority and skilled graduates that can develop new foods and drinks are in high demand. Level 8 programme, Food Innovation (DT421), in DIT covers a comprehensive range of disciplines including science, technology, business and innovation and in a new addition this year, students can also specialise in Brewing and Distilling in their final two years. The structure and syllabus is the result of close collaboration between DIT and its key industry partners, Diageo and Irish Distillers and offers an exciting new opportunity to CAO applicants interested in pursuing a career in a thriving and inventive sector.
A big league career in big data
Data analytics continues to be one of the fastest-growing skills in demand in Ireland and beyond. Business Analytics, a Level 8 programme at DIT, provides graduates with a strong foundation in the subject area and technical skills such as Software Development and Database Systems. And although students will need a certain level of proficiency in Maths, if they don’t achieve the Higher Level Maths grade required, DIT provides an alternative entry route through a Maths Competency test held shortly after the Leaving Certificate results are issued. In addition, students who enrol on the Business Analytics course who have achieved 500 points or more receive a €1,000 scholarship for their first year.
