Passionate about theatre, film or television? Why not work backstage?

Posted on August 22, 2019

Have you experience in working on school productions, youth theatre or amateur theatre productions? Are you dreaming of working in film or television? Did you know that you can turn your passion into a career?

The Lir Academy offers a three year full-time degree in Stage Management and Technical Theatre that is perfect for those with a creative streak. Over the course of three years, students will learn the core aspects of backstage work: stage management, lighting and sound design, set design, prop making and costume design, choosing their area of specialism as their study progresses. The course also has a component on how to run your own business, preparing  students for the competitive demands of the freelance industry.

In fact, The Lir Academy makes sure that students are equipped to work in the industry through three years of hands-on, practical teaching. The students learn by doing from day one and take on different roles in The Lir Academy’s productions. Graduate Leanne Vaughey, who has recently worked as a Costume Supervisor and Dresser on Much Ado About Nothing at the Kilkenny Arts Festival said that studying at The Lir Academy made the role easier: “Because I've done the role multiple times in The Lir on different shows and watched other students when I was in first year, the job just feels easy because it's the same format for the most part and I'm working with a lot of Lir graduates too so it's very familiar”

This year, The Lir Academy boasts a 100% employment rate among the 2019 graduates who have secured work with Riverdance, The Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Dublin Fringe and Dublin Theatre Festival  among others, while they were still completing their studies.

Is your dream career in film or television? The good news is that this degree provides the transferable skills necessary in those industries. The Lir Academy centres this degree on theatre because the learnings apply to other backstage work for example, 2019 graduate Marchje Jansen is working for a Dutch TV Producing company as a Production Assistant. She says that the skills she gained during the degree are “ Easily transferable to use in TV and film and I have been able to use my theatre knowledge on TV shoots."

Applications for the Bachelor in Stage Management and Technical Theatre are open until the end of August. CAO or UCAS points aren’t taken into consideration. If you are passionate and feel like a creative career is your calling apply now! Applications available here.
