Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction. We asked Siobhan Canny from Health Service Executive to give some advice for people considering this job: |

I would advise anybody wishing to pursue a career as a Midwife to focus on having science subjects in their Leaving Certificate. The basic entrance requirements are high at the moment so a good Leaving Certificate is essential (unless applying as a mature applicant). To be accepted onto a training course you have to do an interview where they will determine whether you are suitable for the job or not. In the interview I would advise you to relax and to be yourself, answer honestly and do not be afraid to promote yourself. |

This three-year programme is structured to enable participants to become professional, reflective practitioners with an integrated approach in early childhood education and care. Students will acquire skills in areas such as: children’s play; creative studies; care; education; children’s literature; sociology and social policy. In the second half of the programme, students can specialise depending on areas of interest. A supervised work placement in a variety of early years settings is a key element of the programme enabling students to learn from practice as well as theory.
The design and content of the programme has been determined by the Model Framework for Education, Training and Professional Development for the Early Childhood Care and Education sector. The programme includes a work placement that will bring students into direct contact with children and therefore offers for this programme are conditional and could subsequently be withdrawn if applicants do not successfully complete the Garda Vetting process.
