Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction. We asked Liam Dowling from St. Michael's House to give some advice for people considering this job: |

Do your homework, ask about it - there is lots of infomation out there. You need to be person centred, social, not afraid to mix and to have an understanding of disability or at least be prepared to learn about it. People with an Intellectual Disability ARE NOT SICK , but they can get sick like everyone else and sometimes I feel people outside don't fully understand this. They don't just need Gods help. They need the help of qualified people that want to understand them so that their needs are met and they have chance to enjoy their life as much as is possible. |

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the QQI, HEA or Higher Education Institutes.
Career Opportunities
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.

This is a four year programme in which students develop the skills necessary to assimilate an understanding of the complex and diverse nature of the subject, as well as more general skills which will be widely transferable Students will undertake a critical examination of contrasting perspectives which provide insight into the varied experiences of early years’ settings. Drawing on their ability to locate, review and evaluate research findings they will articulate central theoretical arguments within a variety of EY studies and apply same as skilled practitioners in their chosen industry environment. On successful completion students will be able to work independently and identify the need for knowledge acquisition and skill development on an ongoing basis.
