Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction. We asked Caitriona Jackman from Smart Futures to give some advice for people considering this job: |

| If you are considering full-time scientific research, try to get a work placement in a university department so you can see first hand what it’s like. It’s a relatively relaxed, flexible environment, but there is a certain degree of self-motivation needed. So I would say you need to be able to push yourself and be proactive in terms of setting up collaborations with other scientists etc. |

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the QQI, HEA or Higher Education Institutes.
Career Opportunities
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.

Civil engineering includes the planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of structures, and altering geography to suit human needs. This may include the construction of railroads, dams, bridges, tunnels, or buildings.
The course covers a range of modules including Structural Design, Land Surveying, Hydraulics, Soil Mechanics, Construction Technology, Management Practices & Procedures and Communication Skills.

Graduates will have the ability to take responsibility at a higher technician/middle management level with engineering projects either in a design office or on a construction site. The most common areas of employment are with civil engineering consultancies and local authorities where most of the work is office-based but with opportunities to spend time on site as well, and with civil and building contractors, where most of the work is site-based.
