Course Summary

This course is suited to those who wish to specialise in chemistry for the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries. Pharmaceutical Chemistry is a very important branch of Chemistry that is applied to the synthesis and formulation of new therapeutic drugs as well as the manufacture of medicinal compounds on a large scale.

In this programme you will receive an excellent education in chemistry (physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry), and have the opportunity to specialise in pharmaceutical chemistry, medicinal chemistry and bioinorganic chemistry.

In 1st Yr. students study Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics and 1 other subject from: Computer Science, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Physics and Critical Skills. In 2nd Yr. Chemical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Chemistry and Mathematics. and in 3rd & 4th Yr. Biomedical Chemistry, Chemical Chemistry & Chemistry.

In fourth year there is opportunity to undertake a six-month industrial work placement/internship, subject to availability.

Careers in pharmaceutical, and biotechnology companies agrochemical firms, oil companies, forensic science and manufacturing.  Graduates also find employment in business and finance, government departments, journalism and the health services.

Graduates also undertake research leading to higher degrees.
