Realist

Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

Career Guidance at school

Career Guidance at school is normally delivered by a Guidance Counsellor and other teachers with expertise in the area. They are there to help you to make sense of the world of work and assist you with any decisions you have to take that will affect your career prospects.

Some of the decisions you have to make while at school include:

  • What subjects you choose, and whether they are at Higher Level or Ordinary Level
  • What combinations of subjects are best for certain courses or jobs
  • How to choose and apply for college courses
  • Becoming familiar with apprenticeship study options
  • Applying for a SUSI Grant or college scholarships
  • How to prepare a CV and apply for jobs

Making an Appointment

Guidance Counsellors are often very busy so it is really important that you make an appointment with them if you need information that may affect your career.

When making an appointment it is often useful to have done some research beforehand. Guidance Counsellors know a lot about what opportunities are available, but need to get to know you well to be able to help you with your decisions. A useful tip is to take the free Interest Profiler on CareersPortal to help give you a clearer focus. The results of this will be a good starting point for you and your guidance counsellor.
